How Old to Drive a Jet Ski in Minnesota

In Minnesota, the law says no one under 13 years old may operate a jet ski.

Minimum Age Rules

In Minnesota, anyone younger than 13 is not allowed to drive a jet ski at all. This rule is in place to protect riders and follows state safety laws.

Ages 13 to 17

If someone is between 13 and 17, they can operate a jet ski, but there are conditions:

  • They must have a Minnesota watercraft operator’s permit and meet any supervision requirements, or
  • They can ride if there’s an adult 21 years or older on board.

For a 13-year-old, the adult must be able to watch them directly while they’re riding. For ages 14 to 17, adult supervision is not always required if the rider has the valid permit.

Ages 18 and Up

Once someone turns 18, they can operate a jet ski on Minnesota waters without supervision or a permit. The state still encourages all riders to take a boater safety course, even adults, for better skills and confidence on the water.

Watercraft Operator’s Permit

Minnesota has updated its boating safety laws. Starting in 2025, more people will need a watercraft operator’s permit to run motorized watercraft, including personal watercraft like jet skis. This requirement is based on age and is being phased in over a few years.
